History[edit]
The first TownAce (R10) was a widened and lengthened version of the 1.2 liter LiteAce, still using the same doors and some other panels. It was also sold as the Daihatsu Delta Wide (B10-series). Most versions received the 1.6 liter Toyota T engine, although the smallest KR10 has the same 1166 cc 3K-J engine as the KM10 LiteAce. Wagons have the desmogged 12T engine rather than the 2T (TR11G chassis code rather than TR10V), and therefore lower power.[1]
Later the 1.6 liter 12R-J engine was introduced in the trucks. With chassis code RR10, this model has 80 PS (59 kW), and there was also a slightly longer model (with as much space as the larger HiAce, albeit with a lower payload) which carries the RR20 chassis code[2] - confusing, since the R20-series was generally reserved for the second generation TownAce.

The second generation arrived in November 1982 and underwent a number of facelifts until finally replaced in 1996. A number of engines and bodystyles appeared over the years. Even after the new TownAce appeared, truck versions continued to use the old bodystyle until at least 1999.
A 4WD version (body type CR30) was introduced in the second generation TownAce in December 1985.
The facelifted CR31 was introduced in September 1993 and was produced until October 1996. It had a much more streamlined design at the front. As before, it was available with eitherautomatic or manual transmission and choices of either petrol or diesel engines. Variants were badged asToyota LiteAce (sometimes with "FieldTourer" added). Top-end seven-seater TownAces were badged additionally "Royal Lounge". Eight-seaters are often badged "Super Extra".
The left-hand drive Toyota Van for the USA market has a lot in common with the TownAce, but did not have all the luxury options, 4WD or the diesel engine. Four-wheel drive was briefly offered in the USA as the "WonderWagon" during the late 1980s.
When the TownAce models became available as grey market exports they became popular in UK, where new Spacecruisers had been sold for many years. A ten-year old TownAce was an attractive option for a reliable, cheap MPV with many luxury features - such as aircon/climate control and automatic transmission. The 2CT diesel engine is low powered but offers 30+ mpg (less than 10 L per 100 km).
The TownAce has been very popular in the used export markets across the world, due to its capacities and low price when used.
UK grey import TownAce owners ran into two main issues — the need to keep the engine's ageing cooling system well-maintained and the lack of manuals or other documentation for doing any DIY repairs or maintenance. Websites and forums emerged to solve these problems and Toyota GB provided good support with supply of spare parts even though new TownAces had never been sold in UK. It happened that Toyota had produced a good repair manual (RM025E) for the 2CT diesel I4 engine and Autodata had published a comprehensive TownAce manual, but only in Russian. Other information was gleaned from manuals for the related Toyota Van sold in USA and the Toyota Tarago sold in Australia. In 1997 the TownAce re-emerged as a completely different vehicle, more like a van than an MPV.

The all-new R40 and R50 TownAce appeared in October 1996. To meet new safety regulations, the mid-mounted engine was moved in front of the passenger compartment, giving the car an all-new look. Better equipped versions are called "TownAce Wagon. This generation of TownAce is also sold as the Daihatsu Delta Van.
In late 2007, a new model based on the Daihatsu Gran Max was launched in Indonesia, to replace the Toyota TownAce along with Toyota LiteAce in Japan. Both truck and van type are available with a 1.5 L engine.
