1996–2000[edit]

The Lancia Ypsilon (Type 840) was designed by Enrico Fumia and developed over 24 months at a cost of around 400 billion Italian lira.It was presented in Rome in January 1996. where the arches are repeated on all sides of the car (both front and in the queue, ditto on the sides). The length is 3.72 m, 33 cm more than the Y10. Lancia Y was built on the platform of the Fiat Punto series 176 (the same platform as the Palio and Barchetta) with a redesigned rear suspension set-up to make it more comfortable.
The model features: five seats, a soft to touch plastic dashboard and a range of accessories and options, including non-standard colours with 100 different shades. The central dashboard panel was adopted by the Musa and Ypsilon in 2003.

Initially, the range was recognized by the initials: LE, LS and LX. A special edition Cosmopolitan edition was later added to the line-up. It was created through collaboration with the magazine and based on the Y and LX models for sale in the European market (Italy excluded).
Air conditioning was fitted as standard on the LX and was an option on the LS, which also offered more dashboard features (including a tachometer and larger display with outside temperature indicator).
The engines, part of the Fire series already used first in the Y10 in displacements of between 1,100 and 1,200 cc with 8-valves. The 1.4 "Pratola Serra" 12-valve 80 PS adopted at that time also by the Fiat Bravo/Brava.[6] Given the limited success of this engine, after a short period of time (1 year or so) it was replaced by the first evolution of the multivalve with 1242 cc and multipoint injection,[7] with 86 PS at 6000 rpm and max torque of 113 Nm at 4500 rpm. This engine which debuted on this model is still among the best engines of this displacement, power and performance and is still available on the 2013 Ypsilon, 2013 Ka and the 500. With a unique control system of distribution: a toothed belt drives the camshaft of the exhaust valves, and from these, camshaft gear drives the intake valves. In particular in the Red Elephant version (symbol of the historic sports carsLancia HF), which is the sister car to the Punto Sporting, the end result was a shorter ratio gearbox, lowered suspension with bigger anti-roll bars and more direct power steering, it reached 177 km/h top speed and was the only car in the range to have 15 "wheels with 195/50 tires standard. For those who desired a more discreet and comfortable car the LX and LS were also available with this engine and were able to reach the same top speed as the "Pratola Serra" versions. The 1.2 8V was also available with an ECVT transmission.
The Italian magazine Quattroruote to the car beyond its usual city use while test driving the "Ypsilon 16V LX", among other things, praised the excellent, given the capacity, reserves of power from the engine in highway driving whilst having the same level of comfort of a car worthy of a higher category, making it a versatile car that is suitable for all types of trails. Lancia Ypsilon was also featured inGran Turismo 2. The model was an immediate success both in the first two months were sold over 42,000 cars.

2000–2003[edit]

2000 Lancia Y facelift
In October 2000 the exterior and interior were restyled. The external changes include a new grille larger than the former, new bumpers, new taillights, new wheel cover designs, new fog lights, also the side mouldings of the car becomes much smoother and body coloured. Inside, the most significant change is the headrests (instead of drilled solids) and new seats, new steering wheel (similar to that of the Lancia Lybra), the material was no longer available with "soft touch" in contrast to the first series, as well as the loss of reflective security on doors and the climate control button replaced with a lever and a slight redesign of the instrument panel, more readable and modern, especially in the use of the LED display. The length of the car increased slightly from 3.72 metres to 3.74 metres.
The LX and Red Elephant versions which cost €15.060 list, as in previous series were laden with standard equipment including driver and passenger airbags, air conditioning, ABS, power steering, Blaupunkt radio/navigation system with 6 speakers, split rear seat with headrests, the Alcantara interior similar to the pre-facelift but cheap and less refined, display for outdoor temperature, electrically operated door mirrors painted in body colour, the helm station and instrument panel were red instead of green like the other versions, central locking with remote control, power windows, the seat and the steering wheel were adjustable, leather interior with red stitching on the Red Elephant, fog lamps and alloy wheels with 185/60 R 14 tires for the LX and 195/50 R15 for the Red Elephant.
In the following years were marketed by the names of other special versions DoDo,[9] Vanity and Unica. 16v versions reduce their output of 6 PS (4 kW) due to new Euro 3 pollution standards by reducing emissions with a more linear delivery, while maintaining, and sometimes even increasing, consumption.
Lancia also reduced the engines power from 60 PS on the 1242 cc, due to the addition of the sequential multipoint fuel injection system, but loses its power and drive of the same engine configuration and power Singlepoint Euro 2, because of reductions of CO2that have to fall in Euro 3 limits of the directive.
It also removed from the price of the 55 PS (40 kW; 54 hp) engine 1108, as it had not yet been adapted to the new Euro 3 directive. So the remaining versions to list only the 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp) 1.2 8v and 1.2 16v 80 PS (59 kW; 79 hp).[10]
In September 2003, after nearly eight years of career and just over 800,000 products,[11] debuted its successor, the Lancia Ypsilon, since replaced by 'the following year.
No RHD variant was produced, as Lancia had just ditched sales operations in RHD markets.

The third generation was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011.
The first drawings of the new generation (Type 846) are developed in late 2006 and early 2007 by the Lancia Style Centre, directed by Alberto Dilillo,[23] well before the alliance between Fiat and Chrysler, the final model takes only a few read the changes from the original model especially in the grille that recalls the style of most Chrysler with horizontal slats abandoning the two lobes of the Lancia grille with vertical slats.
The third series of Ypsilon also adopts the five-door body with the rear door handles hidden in the upright (solution similar to that adopted by the Alfa Romeo 147, 156 and Giulietta).
The platform base is no longer that of Fiat Punto but to reduce costs is based on the Fiat Mini platform, the same as the Fiat 500 and Panda, also the production was moved to Poland in Fiat's Tychy plant.[24] The production includes 100,000 units per year at full capacity. The front suspension use the classic independent wheel MacPherson struts while the rear uses a torsion beam with stabilizer bar. Much of the style echoes the forms of Lancia Ardea as many solutions as the "flying bridge" (the waist line that goes through the rear window pillar) are inspired by the Lancia Delta third series.

The Ypsilon Type 846 is the result of an investment of 500 million (150 for development, 40 for the industrial structure and the remainder for investment product), the body is 3.84 meters long with a wheelbase of 2.39 meters and the cabin is approved for 5 seats. At the launch of Lancia Ypsilon provides for up to 600 possible combinations of customizing the car with 16 exterior colors (including 4 B-color version).
The new Ypsilon offers unusual accessories like automatic parking system (Magic Parking), the bi-xenon headlights and LED rear lights in addition to the Start & Stop on some engines. All models are equipped as standard with 4 airbags and stability and traction control (ESP and ASR) with Hill Holder, and ABS with EBD. Versions for the European market are the Silver, Gold intermediate and Platinum the most luxurious. Like all generations of Ypsilon the Type 846 also offers the instrumentation at the center of the dashboard.
Chrysler Ypsilon in Japan
The Ypsilon Type 846 is designed to be sold in many markets, for the first time produced a version with RHD for the UK and Ireland where it is sold as the Chrysler Ypsilon (as Lancia withdrew from those markets after ending RHD production). It is also exported to Morocco and Israel with the Lancia brand leveraging Fiat dealer network. In 2012 it began selling in Japan under the Chrysler brand at Yanase Co., Ltd. Japanese dealerships, while in the U.S. it will not be imported as to avoid internal competition with the Fiat 500, which is produced at Chrysler's Toluca plant in Mexico.
